Thumbs up differential question 2007 escape xlt 3.0

my dif is bad, loud and annoying, mechanic says it needs to be replaced because the bearings are toast. @ $3000. I cant do it. so, im not afraid to tackle this replacement and save myself a bunch of money but I have a few questions....
1. is the assembly repairable? by that I mean... I may be cheaper for me to just buy a few new tools, gears, and bearings and just swap out everything, im concerned that ford made this a "replace entire assembly only" type part.
2. incase I have to buy the assembly... there seems to be an ABS option when purchasing the differential.... I thought ABS was standard?? what am I missing?
thanks in advance guys and gals

Which bearings are bad? if its just the CV axle bearings those are not all that bad, if it is internal you should consider how mechanically able you are, maybe your great or maybe taking apart a diff is beyond you, I think most people can figure out CV axle bearings without to much trouble.
I dont see anything for internals of the diff from Ford and that seems weird but I have not done one of these diffs, I cannot see why there would not be a pinion bearing though.
