If there is a warning light there is a code set, the auto zone code readers are very basic and only see the basic codes not pending codes or past codes.
Go to a dealer who can pull all codes using IDS or a real shop that has a proper code reader that hopefully can read all codes.

Have you learned anything more on this issue? I’m currently having the same exact problem. First I received a Powertrain fault system message service now while leaving work. Made it home let the car sit all day checked and had no coolant. Added some, started car and now says Engine Fault SERVICE NOW. White exhaust smoke on first start after sitting a while too.

Did the engine temp guage get abover normal temp when you were driving? Do you see any coolant leaks? Have you pulled the codes yet?

Two things could be happening: start with the easy one first, due a thorough cleaning of the throttle body and possibly replace it, if it does not clear the fault.
if it is direct injection may need to do a valve cleaning, perhaps seafoam may help.

I just recently started experiencing the issue with the Engine Fault Service Now message. The only work I recently had done was an oil change at the dealer and then a week later a new battery installed (mid-September). No other problems. No noises. No smells. No other messages. I took the car to Auto Zone and no codes. The guys said because it is not a true service engine light. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Default Engine

I just had the engine and turbocharger replaced in my 2016 focus. I drove roughly 65 miles and was waiting for someone so the car was idling for about 10 minutes. the engine fault: service now message came on, no check engine light or anything. It went into limp mode so I let it sit for a day or two. i started it again and the message was gone, and drove fine. the dealer reset the computer entirely and it drove fine for a week until it did the same thing 5 minutes ago. anyone else have this issue?

The reason the SES light extinguished was because when you disrupt the KAM (keep alive memory) either disconnecting the battery or clearing codes with a scanner, all learned run data, codes, present, past and pending) are erased and ECU is set to manufacturer default.

The fault will return as soon as the ECU attempts to run its diagnostics and report the ready monitors.. By erasing the codes/DATA you make it more difficult to diagnose and more expensive to repair..
