Ignition issue, replay key?

Ignition issue, replay key?
I'm troubleshooting a starting issue on my 2011 Escape. Getting the engine to actually crank feels like winning the lottery.
The key turns fine, all the accessories work, but it usually takes between 2-7 times to find the right amount of pressure to apply both when inserting the key and turning it.
I've replaced the ignition switch which has improved but not solved the problem. I'm now wondering if maybe the problem is a worn key.
So I'd like to get a new key made. Is my only option the dealer? Since I'm not sure this will fix the issue, I'd rather avoid paying a few hundred dollars for the replacement.
