Default Ignition Switch

When i start my 2002 ford escape the starter is still engaged like i am holding the key in the start position, what could that possibly be??? Need advice asap

Does it stop once the engine start?

If the key springs back when you release it, I doubt the ignition switch is bad. Two things I would check is a bad bendix on the starter which is not retracting and replacing the starter is the best bet. The solenoid is hanging up and keeping the starter energized.Either case, you need to fix it asap before the teeth on your flywheel are trashed.My money is on the bad bendix gear on the starter.
