Default 91 Escort A/T trans problem

I have a 91 Escort with A/T. The other day I was driving normally and the transmission went away without any slippage or surging. It was as if something either snapped (no snapping noise was heard) or broke. No power was available to the front wheels and there was no indication of any impending problems. I have owned it since new and it has about 135K on the odo.
I have my shop manual but it doesn't address a symptom like this. I thought that at first that a drive belt (if it had one) had broken, it was that sudden.
Anyone have any ideas what I should look for?[:-]
