Default Automatic gear shift lever ?

Does anybody know if the gear shift lever is supposed to light up when the lights are on for a 1998 Ford Escort SE Wagon ? The dash lights up but not the lever.

I was working in the garage the other night and my wife came home from shopping and said she needed a small flashlight to keep in the car at night. She said the gear shift lever does NOT light up when she turned on the headlights.

I said bulb is burned out and I will fix it. Looked in the owners manual and under bulb specs it doesn't show a bulb for the lever.

Did Ford decide they could save some money if they didn't light up the shift Lever ? After all they didn't put a lock on the glove box !! I thought I could get a lock on Ebay but they don't show one. They have plenty of glove box parts but no locking ****.

Thanks
