Default cant figure out valve cover grommets

1993 Escort LX, 1.9

Ok, this is going to sound stupid, but i cant figure out which way the valve cover grommets go back on the valve cover

Seems like they would go in from the crankcase side of the engine with the angled side pointing down, but they fall out into the engine. facing up, they get pushed into the engine when you drive the bolt down and cant secure the valve cover properly.

Any help appreciated.

I don't remember for sure, but I believe that those rubber gromment have a steel insert to prevent pushing them through when tightend. I think they were a gold colored small cylinder just a tad bigger than the bolts. I did the valve cover gasket on my old '92 1.9L but it's been so long I just can't be sure.
