Default ?? coolant leaking into oil

My brother in-law bought this 93 escort with air conditioning (dirt-cheap), and when having it checked out he was told that coolant is leaking into the oil.
He asked me to do an info search on it and see what I could find out weather he should replace the entire engine or if it could be something
simple.

Any suggestions would really help.

probaly why it was dirt cheap , possibly a bad headgaskit , if so your looking at roughly $500.00-$600.00..... If its a cracked head , maybe in the range of $900.00 +, how cheap was the car ????? . oh an hopefuly it wasnt run to long with coolant in the oil an ruined the lower brgs, an crankshaft , cam an brgs. etc .............Sorry,,,,,,,but hey ----- Happy New Year

thanks for the info, I'm looking into this cus i was thinking of buying it for my wife.
I read elsewhere that it could be a manifold leak and we could tell if we removed the spark plugs
and inspected for coolant.

If that's case, would that be a less costly problem to remedy.

No removing the spark plug wont tell you if its an intake leak, Dont know who told you that , prehaps they had a intake gaskit leaking, but if the headgaskit is bad or the head cracked, the water leaks in on the piston an down past the rings , thats how it gets in your oil.

I've had vechiles that the Heads were cracked so bad that if you pulled the spark plug out, it would shoot a stream out like a garden hose turned on, with the engine off an just a lil pressure on the rad.
