Default Loud rattle

I have a 98 escort. Last night it started running rough loosing power. Than it souded like a belt broke.Belt isnot broke. Made it to a parking lot than it died. Started it today and it runs but its making a loud pinging noise.Idles terrible. Engine light is flashing. Any help?

Trouble code from check engine light ought to hold the answer here. Get it scanned and then repost please.

According to the Escort forum I'm on, the early 2.0L SOHC motors are bad for dropping valveseats. This sounds like the same problem as described. One broken valve can easily turn into more because of the metal debris ingested into the intake manifold and eventually into other cylinders.
