Default North American Escorts - where were they sold?

I find it so confusing that Ford sold two distinctly different vehicles with the same model name. I loved my '66 MkI Lotus Cortina, why, oh why, didn't "we" that the bitchin' little rear-wheel drive Escort? Whatever... .. .

I was under the impression that "our" front-wheel drive Escorts were solely for U.S./Canadian consumption. But this morning I ran across this Ford document; all dimensions are metric, and the wording is in German.
