Default Power steering assit fault?

We drive a 2010 escape, 170,000 kl, I cummute ever day to work. I have no powersteering and the computer shows " Power steering assit faul' and no power steering in truck. I have been told it is like a thousand dollar job. at first it showed this message, but the power steering was working.

However when I turned off truck and back on next time, no power steering and it has stayed off. Is there anything i could check myself, like fuse or something easy before taking it in/

I had it in for the recall about a month ago but they found no code. Turns out if you dsconnect the battery it will cancell all codes, but they never told me that before checking. Now they will not do anything for me, would be grateful for any help. Must fix this one way or the other by early next week, need truck for work.

If fuse where would it be? Thank you !
