Can someone tell me what the can on the A/C compressor discharge line is?
2011 Expedition.

 

It's a built in line muffler. You may even have one on your low pressure side also. Some systems have one on both, some don't.

 

Thanks UCS. I have been Diesel mechanic for over 20 years. I've repaired A/C's on Internationals, Kenworths, Freightliners etc.
I have never seen one before, so it had me scratching my head. I suppose it has something to do with the type of compressor?

The compressor shelled out, so I will be replacing it, the condensor, expansion valves, and flushing the rest of the system.
Is the line muffler just a hollow can that can be flushed, or do I need to replace that line also?

 

Any line with a muffler is a non-flushable line. Debris will set in dead spots and not come out/free until the system is live. Then you'll plug up the orifice, or expansion valve (or both depending on the system and front or dual A/C). Then you cause oil starvation to the new compressor causing it to fail.

You should also replace the dryer/accumulator any time an A/C system is opened or repaired.
