I have an '05 with the dreaded 5.4 Triton motor. There's 85000 miles on it, and I recently had the Cam Phasers, and VCT Solenoid replaced. The truck was not maintained correctly, and the oil went about 24K without a change.
It runs perfectly at highway speed, and anything above an idle. When put in reverse, or idling it will "diesel" and shut down.
The motor looks great, not a lot of sludge or build up thanks to multiple engine flushes.
I'm at a loss.....replace the motor, or try to find the problem?
The passenger side is running fine, the codes say that the cam is over retarded on the drivers side.
Any suggestions?

 

hey crazy chicken lady...i have exactly the same problem going on in my 05..just wondering if you ever got the problem solved and if so what was it and who diagnosed it..any feedback would be appreciated. thanks.

 

The PCM varies the the cam timing of the camshafts. I will need to be checked out with the proper equipment.
