Default 2004 Heater thumping

This issue began when I turned the heat on one day and I wasn't getting any hot air from the dash vents. The defrost and floor vents all had hot air coming out, but not the dash. Then just this morning I heard a thumping noise from and now I don't have any heat coming from any of the vents. Could this be the heater core or blower motor for the heater? If so, how difficult would it to replace any of those items? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, winter started yesterday and if I don't get this fixed it will be a cold winter.

Thumbs up

Welcome to the site..

Sounds like a blend door actuator fail..
Can the thump (but usually more of a clicking) be produced by cycling the temp controls ‘without’ the engine running? Key ON, Engine OFF

Generally if a heater core is restriction or the system contains trapped air, they tend to girgle. Thump if the coolant is excessively low, and more so combined low coolant, air, and over-temp on the system.

Core restriction can usually be detected by manually checking for a ‘balanced temp’ on the inlet and outlet lines at the firewall. With a restricted/plugged core, one of the lines would be noticeably cooler.

Being the cabin heat was Hot just prior to the noise, no engine coolant level drop, no temp increase indicated on the panel, most likely not a core issue.
Blower motor fails aren’t very common, but can,, and usually would involve some high pitch noise, growling, squeal etc and of course you wouldn’t feel any venting or air movement if a complete blower failure. Usually just turning the key ON position, and selecting the fan/blower command would audibly prove out the blower run..

If it’s a blend door, there’s some pretty good repair vids on YouTube, or I could provide you with some illustrated step procedures for the job if you want, or as a preview of the job before moving forward..

Some things to check,
When any control settings call for heat and the blower is turned on, can you hear the blower motor run?
A quick check for the heater core is to feel the 2 hoses that go to the heater core under the hood. Is one hose hotter than the other, do both hoses feel the same temp?
Does your vehicle have automatic temp control or do you regulate it adjusting the temp manually?
There are small motors that control various doors to control output temp and one could possibly be jammed or broken.
What model vehicle are we looking at?

That would be much appreciated if you could supply with me some procedures on that protocol. Thanks.
