Default 2006 Explorer O/D Off Not Working

My 2006 Explorer O/D light does not illuminate when you turn the key on. The truck does not come out of O/D when I depress the O/D Off button on the gear selector when I'm driving, either. The truck otherwise shifts properly and smoothly. Am I in for a costly repair? I've been saving for years to get this Explorer, and would hate to think I made a mistake.

I don't believe you made a mistake, but I have been wrong lots of times before this !
All kidding aside, some vehicles have a separate fuse for that OD shift switch. If you have the owner's manual look through the fuse section and what the fuses protect. It should list the OD control switch in the descriptions. If you can't do that , then you might need to check all the fuses, both in the vehicle and under the hood .

Default Thanks.

Thanks Hanky. I checked the fuse list before becoming a member of this forum and did not see the O/D listed. It really seems like a fuse. This vehicle has so many more features than anything I've owned before. It will take some time before I become familiar with it. I really like it - I just want everything to work!

I don't blame you , everything should work.
Pulling fuses can be a real drag. I would suggest you invest in a decent test lite , checking fuses with a test lite is quick and easy. How about it?

Default OD off

Its probably either the switch in the gear shift lever or in the older ones the wires coming out of the lever in the steering column would break it's pretty common and pretty simple to fix either one.

Thanks everyone - for those of you having this problem, it was the gear shift lever circuit board. There was a recall that the previous owner never took advantage of, so I had to pay for the repair. The good news was that it was not ridiculously expensive. I Love this truck.
