96 Explorer Ball joints

Does anyone know thr difference between an upper and a lower ball joint, besides an extra $30?

upper ball joint is secured by pinch bolt and has no thread on shaft, lower has threads and shaft is tapered.

I had to shrink this...was too large..hope it comes through ok
