Exclamation AC Clutch Relay Issues

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the AC in my 2007 Ford Explorer XLT. The compressor and clutch seem to be in working order, but the AC won’t engage when I use the relay. Here’s what I’ve observed:
  • When I manually jump the clutch using a pair of needle nose pliers, the AC starts working, and I can hear the clutch engage.
  • However, when I put the relay in, the AC does not work, and the clutch does not turn on.
  • I tested the relay by swapping it with the fog light and horn relays, and it works fine in those circuits.
Is it a wiring issue? I am able to jump 3 and 5 on the relay but is it the 1 and 2 wiring which would be the ground and power from the AC switch?Given this, it doesn’t seem like the relay itself is faulty. I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for what could be causing this issue or what I should check next. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

To look up parts or diagrams I don't know what XLT is. Engine size missing so I randomly picked 4.6L. Check my signature below.

There are two cut off switches in the relay activation circuit, low press and high press. If,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,either is stuck open or is not receiving the correct info from the system,
the relay does not get activated. That is the area you need to verify first, is there sufficient refrigerant in the system to to produce the pressure required to close the low press sw. You have verified the electrical part is capable of sending power to the clutch. Now you need to verify the switch is being activated and if not, check pressure in the system.. Let us know how you make out with this, thanks..
