How do you reset the check engine light?

The lightshould go out if you disconnect and reconnect the battery. This clears the error code stored in the computer. Please keep in mind that the Check Engine Light will come back on if you haven't repaired or replaced the part that's causing the error.

Yes, and I'd leave the battery disconnected for several minutes. If the problem has been fixed, the light should remain off. I understand the vehicle needs to be drivenfor several miles so the computer can re-learn various parameters, and the vehicle may run sluggish during this time. If your truck is a 95 or newer, disconnecting the battery won't help...at least it didn't on my Caravan. You need to have the light cleared by an OBD II scan tool or code reader. There's always exceptions though...I don't remember the number of "drive cycles" (start-up, warm-up, speed, shut-down...40 comes to mind) but if you fix the fault, the light will clear by itself after the correct number of drive cycles have been accomplished.
