Default Engine noise has been amplified...what happened?

Yesterday I started my '97 Explorer up, and it sounded like a jet was under my hood. I checked my fluids- all good. The fan seems fine. Occasionally it makes a gurgle type sound at random times. Here is a video of what it all sounds like. The gurgle sound starts at about 11 seconds.

I tried tracing the sound, and it sounds like it is coming from the alternator area. Part of me thinks it has something to do with a pulley. Maybe alternator bearing? Let me know what you guys think.

I was starting to think the same thing. I youtube'd a couple videos of alternator bearings going bad, and it sounds similar.
Think I'd be able to make a 3 hour journey on the interstate with a bearing going bad?

if I could change it before I left, I would. I'm a little stubborn and I don't want to pay a mechanic to do it. Am I taking a risk that could end up being 10 times more expensive than labor and parts? you betcha. I'm either going to learn my lesson really bad, or I will get lucky.

UPDATE:
Found out what was wrong...the hard way. Made it 2 hours on my trip, and the idler pulley gave out (completely snapped off) and claimed the belt as a victim. Picking up the parts tomorrow. However instead of paying the $40+ for the stock belt, I'm going to go with a shorter belt that bypasses the AC compressor. The AC never worked, nor do I need it to, so why strain the engine and maybe I'll gain 1mpg?

But anyways, thanks to all who contributed, and kudos to those who guessed right.
