Default gas gauge is really off

my first problem was getting bad gas milage, now even though im getting good milage my gas gauge will say empty and the light will come on when i still have 4-5 gallons left in the tank, does anyone else have this problem? i would go off the trip but im worried the first time i do that the gauge will be telling the truth and ill run out of gas.

my gauge was off a considerable amount when I first got it but i did notice after i changed my entire fuel pump assy. it seemed to read what I believe to more correct. the main thing you would actually want to replace probably is the fuel level sending unit attached to the fuel pump inside the gas tank but if your going into all that you may as well change out the whole fuel pump assy. while your there. Does the gauge say its full when you fill it up though or is it reading off then to? the reason i asked is cause my sening unit was malfunctioning to the point it would read full then the next day it would read like a 1/4 or a 1/2 tank, and keep in mind i hadnt driven the explorer and it aint leaking gas so i know i had the same amount each time i checked it but almost everytime it was a different reading on my gauge. anyhow another thing i was remembering when i put my gas tank back in after the installation of the new fuel pump assy. was thinking it took a pretty good amount of gas to even get it to register on the gauge after being completely bone dry. I was just thinking maybe the gauge is reading empty early as to keep you from actually running out or somthing. Think about it I personal know i have driven cars that extra 30 to 50 miles after they said they were empty so they must have more in them then the gauge said. hell come to think of it i dont think i ever had a car that did actually run out of when it first hit empty on the gas gauge. well thats my thoughts from my past experiences hope you figure it out.

I'm not sure you have a problem, at least not a major one. With FI your not going to get every drop out of a tank like the old days because the fuel pickup is comming from the top of the tank. That means the fuel pickup will not reach the bottom of the tank so that it doesn't pick up the crud in the bottom. Just for an example I have a 1600 Vulcan motorcycle. The tank capacity is 5.2 gal. I never put more than 4 in it even when the fuel light was on and it was sputtering to the pump. That was just an example so some people won't say why are you talking motocycles. Anyways if you do the same with a 22 gal. tank 4 gal. isn't ot of the question. Hope that helps you
