Knock 1998 Ford Explorer
Hello,
I'm a proud owner of a 1998 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer (4x4) and recently I've started noticing a slight knock when I'm slowing down or accelerating. I have checked the bearings, wheels, and transmission (along with the shafts). It sounds to me as if something needs to be lubricated, I have gone through and lubricated everything within my site but the slight knock continues. When driving, it feels as though the noise is directly below (front) of the driver. Has anyone experienced this before? Was there something that you needed to add grease to? Thanks in advance.
Best,
Eric

RE: Knock 1998 Ford Explorer
I have a 98 XLT 4WD, and had a noise that was intermitent knocking below the drivers seat area, sounded like someone was knocking on the floor. The noise was tied to the speed and came on with acceleration and deceleration and more so when I was turning left. After months of looking for the problem, as you did, I found that the plastic protector that covers the right side and top of the gas tank had come of of its proper mount position on the tank flange, and was just close enough that it would hit a small plastic plug on the forward part of the drive shaft, thus causing the knock that drove me crazy for several months. I tried to put the plasic cover back several times, but it kept coming off agian and agin. I finaly used a binder clip to hold it i place and have not heard the annoying knock since. Hopefully this is the same knock you are experiencing
Good luck,
