Default Problem coming out of 4x4

I have an '00 Explorer XLT.....i was driving it around yesterday in the snow and it was fine when i put it in 4x4 High and 4x4 Low....but when i come to pavement, like on the highway, i switch it back to "Auto" and it stays in 4x4 High or Low. The only way I can get it back into 2 wheel is by restarting the car....is this supposed to happen, it staying on 4x4 or is there something wrong with my car?
