Default Shake Rattle and Roll

Situation: I have a 1994 Exploder 4x4 with a 4.0. A couple of months ago the vehicle got hot, not excessive, and a hose was found bad. Hose was replaced and now have three symptoms.

1. Temperature gage is not stable in that it fluctuates up and down depending on load.

2. When I first start the vehicle it misses a little but when it warms up, a little, the miss goes away.

3. When I drive the vehicle it does not shift immediately. If I accelerate the it will go into 2nd and shift normal until it is parked and it cools down. Depending on the outside temperature, if warm, it is still normal. If it is cold the same circumstance reoccurs.

My thoughts:

On item 1: I am thinking that the thermostat may have gone bad when it got hot.

On item 2: I am thinking that the head slightly warped that resolves itself temporarily when it gets warm. If so, partial engine teardown required.

On item 3: Initially I was thinking that the filter may need to be replaced.

Predicament/Question: Other than the head gasket the transmission filter and thermostat are easily resolved. I am not convinced that all three items would happen at the same time, however, I don't rule it out. Is there possibly a valve, sensor, or hose that could have burnt or melted due to the overheating that could cause 2 or 3 of the problems?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Quick Question: Is the bolt head size to remove the radius arm at the front end 18MM?

Likeky not the head or head gasket. Try thermostat but likely water pump. If your temp. guage buried (pegged) the needle over the highest reading or the temp. light (if you have no guage) was on for a while - then maybe the head too. If you have auto. trans. - changing the filter early will help. Your vehicle is older - give it a minute to warm up before you drive and it should be okay -that's normal. Sometimes it helps to get it on a highway once in a while and ride at about 65 MPH for a while to blow carbon out the motor heads - the only drawback is the carbon then plugs up the catalytic converter (which then will bog down the engine and need replaced itself).
