My explorer has developed a slight growl at start up cold, goes when warm. and ocaisional at times.
I am aware of the timing chain issue, and have come to the conclusion its the chain begining to go slack.
I am a competent mechanic does anyone have any tricks that might circumvent a close look. Has anyone done a repair, renewal. engine in car.
any help gladly recieved.

I seem to have the same problem with my 01 Sport Trac. Did you get it fixed? What was the problem?

 

My 98 had a recal for the intake gasket. It would not run right only when it was cold outside.
I had them replace all belts and hoses and clamps as they were at it.
Have an 03 now.

 

The front timming chain Mod required doing, which also includes taking off the inlet manifolds which leads to the inlet maifold joint mods which come in the ford kit. This fixes any eratic tick over problems due to air getting in behind the air mass measurement gadget. Easy enough about 6 hrs work as i had not done it.
