Default Steering column wiring problems

We have a 96 Explorer w/ 160k miles in the family. The steering column has had problems in the past. First thing, the left side buttons for the cruise control had faulty wires, eventually running way too hot and melting the plastic buttons. Then, the left blinker wouldnt work properly when you pushed it all the way in the "locking" position, you had to hold it half way, but it eventually fixed itself. Then the cruise control wouldnt work every time, you had to keep pressing the button over and over to eventually get it, but now it doesnt work at all. Has anyone else had any problems with the wiring? I am wondering if I should just jump in there and take a look at things, or let it slide.
