Default 86 f150 acting up

I have a 86 f150 2wd 5.0 efi, the problem I'm having is when it idles it goes up and down and kinda rough, I was stopped at a red light to day and it was almost like a ghost just punched the gas and it tried to take off on me, I was thinking it could be between timing and the fuel injection I know its not the pump it was replaced, and could it also be vacuum, one of the reasons I ask timing cause the timing has jumped a couple of times, could that be that the distributor is warn out or in the timing chain, what should I check first so that I'm not in the game of just guess and go swapping out parts sense I'm 8 hrs out of town, any help is appreciated

There is a decal usually under the hood providing directions for checking timing. Can I ask you what you did to check the timing and what readings you got?
I thought I was far from parts places , but 8 hours is really tough.
