it really depends on the sound you are looking for i have a 77 f150 with the 400 in it with 40 series flowmaster mufflers on it and it gives of a deep rumble at idle and a good deep mellow tone while driveing

Another thing that is important is what components you will be replacing. If it is just the mufflers and you want a louder, rumbling sound then something like a Cherry Bomb or Thrush glass pack would be ideal. If you want it to be loud, then going straight pipes will do you well. If you want a good sound, Flowmasters may be ideal. Replacing the stock tubes and cats with h-pipes or x-pipes will effect the sound. The diameter of the tube makes a difference, too.

A good question may be how much do you want to spend and what are you looking to replace?

Cherry bombs have something similar inside. It isn't a "mesh" exactly, but it is similar. Maybe "grating" is a better way to describe it.
