Default camshaft sensor synchronizer

My son removed his camshaft synchronizer without realizing that there were gears that had to be lined up, and got his fuel out of sync. Does anyone know how to adjust the gears to get them where they should be?

you have to line up the line on the gears to the timing. which means that you have to set the engine on the first piston that lights.

I don't think he got the gears out of line after all, he put the synchronizer back in right away. We put the engine @ tdc, used a protractor to mark off 54 degrees on paper, then laid the paper out to determine where the 54 degrees would be on the engine. We ran the engine about 8 minutes and it was running rough. We moved the sychronizer counter clockwise and it ran worse. We moved it back to the original position, and then went i tooth clockwise and it ran better, but still ran rough. He has a Ford F150 with a 4.2 engine. One item that seemed strange to me was that I got a rental adjustment tool from auto zone for this truck. There were 4 adjusters in the box. The box said that I needed to use the gray adjuster. The gray adjuster was totally different from my sons. The only one that fit his synchronizer was the black one.
