Default engine noise when cold

my 2001 5.4 makes a loud tapping noise when cold. Sounds like a lifter that isnt pumping up. Noise will come and go until engine is completely warmed up and then you wont here it anymore. Oil level and pressure is good. Since this is an overhead cam engine and doesnt have lifters, I'm not sure what to look for. I see there is a lash adjuster, are these hydraulic and could this be the problem. If so is this a difficult replacement? 128,000 miles on engine.

First a Question, do you use Fram oil filters? I read somewhere ( I think it was on the old ford tractor forum ) this one guy did a comparion of oil filters, cut them up to see how they are made and Fram quality has fallen off. I had a cold start tick on my 97 F150 112,000 miles, Changed to a Wix filter and haven't had that problem since. ( I will post the link if I find it )

Always take it to the lube shop, not sure whose filters they use. Oil is changed at proper intervals.
