Default F150 engine

My son has a 2004 F150 and it needs an engine....he has called a salvage yard and was told that 2004 was s year all by itself. I find that hard to believe! Can anyone tell me what years 5.4 engine will fit in his F150. I own a 2004 Expiration and I need some body, interior parts and possibly a transfer case I was hoping to buy a Expedition and take what I need and give him the engine

Don't feel bad, starting with 04, there are a few years that should be by themselves. I won't get into why we say that, but if you do a little research I believe you will understand why I say that.
Ford trucks are tough, but sometimes I think the engineers fell asleep at the switch. And maybe it wasn't the engineers, maybe the bean counters.
Because things like mid year changes get into the picture , computer controlled engines just are not all the same.Certain parts may be inter changeable , but not always the engines.
