considering purchasing an intake for my '03 F-150 Lariat 4x4 w/ 6" lift and 35" tires. ive been getting 10-12 MPG and have heard that an intake would help my MPG...but how much? dont care to much about anyhting else but gas mileage, pretty satisfied w/ everything else. ive also heard something about a "CHIP" as another alternative...where can i get these things? PLEASE ADVISE, on what brand (model # would also help). thanks for ur info.

 

Superchips would be a good place to start. Oterwise use a search engine to look for automotive performance chips.

Intake and exhaust could help. K&N airfilter would help. The difference in mpg isn't going to be staggering by any means.

Very true. You could spend up to around $2000 buying a chip, intake, and full exhaust system. $2000 can buy a lot of gas!

Another thing with air intakes to watch out for is if it is an intake that will be sucking air from the inside of the engine compartment or from outside the vehicle. The air inside the engine compartment is warm/hot compared to that of air from the outside.

Sucking in warm air can have no effect or even a negative effect on engine performance. Cool air is denser, so you have more molecules in the same set volume as warm air. The more air molecules you have per set volume, the more "air" the engine can use to burn. The more/better the engine can burn fuel, the more power it can produce. This is one reason that intercoolers are now used in turbos and superchargers.

You could get a K&N air filter for about $50 that would help out.

 

yeah, you could just buy the filter another thing is those high flow air filters don't really filter the air as well as OEM filters, i have seen a lot of trucks get their motors dusted from running those filters in the desert

 

what size gears are you running?

 

to be honest...i have no idea what gears i am running. i just bought the truck as is. would proly need to find out...but what difference would that make...would it be that obvious if some adjustments werent made cause of the lift?
