Default Oil Filter Housing

Local Ford dealership told me I had a crack in oil filter housing. They told me I needed another motor. They quoted me $8,000 for motor and labor!!!!!! Any thoughts?? Can this be fixed anyway besides a new motor?

I'm a school teacher and its my sons truck. It is sitting at home right now, its a 2005 not sure about which motor it is. I will look after school today. They told me I should put $8000 down on a new truck down there!!! I just laughed, I dont have that kind of money. It will quit and turn over and not crank, then after it sits for a while it will crank. It was very low of oil when we took it in,but after filling it up I cant see it just pouring out anywhere under it. It also needs new plugs and coil packs, which is why I took it in the first place. My normal mechanic was scared the plugs would break off on him and he did not want to do it.

"It will quit and turn over and not crank, then after it sits it will crank"

Meaning, it starts and runs, engine locks up (no crank) then after it sits it cranks/runs again, correct?
Most times if you drain the oil you'll see collected metal debris on the plug, or suspended (glitter) in the engine oil. Cutting open the oil filter can tell a tail as well as to damages..And of course unusual engine noises..
If it was starved for oil it would damage the base engine and sounds like the case given the 'new motor' suggestion. If the truck is in respectable shape, not high mileage/no other issues worthy of the expense, an option may be a used Auto Dismantler engine. Still an investment, but lower cost than a reman engine, comes with a 90 day guarantee or more, and generally a engine swap/ labor for the donor engine can be shop dependent negotiated. A used engine comes complete, no build up, part swap time involved.. Possible you could cut that quote in half, maybe more..
