Default Old F150 VS New F150.....

Just wondering what you guys thought was a better built truck? When it came to taking sheer abuse....

Just for Comparision purposes lets compare the 73-79's to the 97-03's.

Im not talking about tow ratings, and im not talking about cold starting, or whatever else. Which truck, all being equal (including parts wear, could physically handle more abuse......im talking abuse like goingout in a field or something and romping the hell outta both of them untill one breaks.....

Im saying the 73-79....those we're real trucks.

The 80-86 we're good trucks, no denying that. But they did have some weak links when compared to the 73-79's, the one I can think of off the top of my head was in 80 they switched to balljoints from kingpins....kingpins are stouter.

I didnt really care for the 87-91's, I guess they we're good trucks, (my dad had a 88), but I ddont really care for the Fuel Injection and O\D transmissions.

When it comes down to taking plain ol' abuse, I'd have to agree with both of you and say that the earlier models were more hearty than the newer ones...mainly because they were made from more metal that composites...I would have to also go with Ramrod re: 80's trucks...they sorta perfected 'em by that point with the technology that was available...and the addition of Fuel injection and such on the later 80's models were just like anything else...when you're trying something new, it takes awhile to get it right...think of how long it took to get the early 80's ones to where they were on old tech...

Yea but in the end , king pins wear out too , An its far easier to replace ball joints, plus gave a smoother ride. As for the fuel injection , It more than doubled the life of the engine , Cause you didnt have all that extra fuel pouring down the cylinders , Gave you more power , an better accelration ,,, Now on the AOD , I gotta agree with you ,( but it wasnt till they came out with the E4OD that they had a lot of problems ) However it pretty easy to swap out an AOD , for a C-6,, An nuthing looks better than a Mid 80's 4x4 with a lift kit an 33's all the way round , with white spoke wheels , It just had that big tough squared looked about it, You might say the Bulldogs of Pick-up trucks

I personally think the 73-77's with the round headlights look the toughest.....78-79's wernt bad, and 80-86 rounded out the last of the tough looking F series trucks.

What I dont like about EFI is the fact that when it works.....it works good....but when it takes a **** I really wish I had a Carburator.
