Default Overheating - radiator problem (?)

I'm having a problem with my 1996 Ford 150 (5.8L). First, my check engine light is on, at one point it was blinking, now stays on - but i have not done an OBD test on it. Second, I recently noticed that my water gage is getting to the H and not dropping, I've added some anitfreeze but it didn't seem to help. It seems like my truck is loosing antifreeze somewhere but I have not found a leakage, yet.
A friend said possibly a head gasket could be blown? But I haven't checked. Any ideas, or what could I look at/check out ?

I guess the first thing to do is have the codes read. Then address the overheating problem. If it overheats quickly, address that first.
