It can improve performance, but it's illegal most places. I know in Missouri, where I live, it won't pass safety inspection.

Hi Will,
You didn't provide us with much info as to the year of the vehicle. If it has converters and it is with oxygen sensors before and after the converters it could get complicated.
Depending on what kind of engine and fuel system , difficult to provide a worthwhile answer.

I wonder then, here in michigan I've had my truck now 12 yrs and I've never had that inspection. I guess any muffler shop should be able to tell me........what about the O2 sensors? Thanks for your quick reply rusty

Well, technically it's a Federal offense (read $5000 fine) for anybody to remove a known good working catalytic converter (just saying ). Here in NY, anything built after 1983 is required to have a converter to pass inspection. Also, the converter(s) that Ford uses are normally large enough to decently flow a 460 CID engine. As far as how the engine will run would be by trial and error. The computer will always stick its pesky little electrons in the mix, but the better you can get the exhaust to flow out of the cylinders the better the engine will perform.

Well thanks for the response. I would much rather use new cats but they are so pricey. My exhaust broke in two right between the two cats . Not much room.its been runnin so bad lately. Thanks again

first off, it must have the cat. cons. to run without the check engine lite coming on. no exhaust shop can cut those out without replacing them. on that new of a truck the pcm or the computer runs it all. and Rusty here in Missouri if you have one that is older than 1981 you can cut them out and get away with it.
