Look on the front of the valve covers and see if there is any electronic parts there. If there is wiring going to a part in the valve cover, it is possible the cam phaser (VVT variable valve timing) could be the cause. See if there is a history code from P1380 to P1388. if there is, the VVT is at fault. Or if there is a P0011 or P0012 the VVT solenoid is at fault. The code descriptions for the codes are for camshaft timing.

Default F150 missfire

hey guys i need some help. my truck randomly started idling rough or missfiring. i have a check engine light and codes P0012 and P0172. A ford mechanic seems to think it is the cam phaser but i disagree. he barely even checked it and just went by the "tick" i have changed my plugs, camshaft sensor, VCT soulenoid and i still have the codes and rough idle. im pulling my friggin hair out over this and really need it fixed ASAP. does anyone have any ideas? or experiences? thanks for the help.

If your truck has the P0012, it is more than likely the cam phaser. That is a code for cam timing not being right.

teewhite66, If your vehicle has VVT (variable valve timing) I believe there should be a camshaft sensor for each bank on some engines.
