I have a 1984 f150 and when I set the iming to specs it idles and runs poorly and hesitates on take off,but when I set the timing up 6 or 7 degrees it runs better.The only thing is that with the timing set uphigher makes it run warm and I can feel i surging when going down the road.
What could be the problem?

 

Do you unplug the SPOUT connector before manually timing it ?
