Default Tire size and performance

I have a 2004 F-150 crew cab short box FX4. It currently has 20" wheels and tires, and I am having a heck of a time pulling a 4800lb camper. I am thinking about going down to 17" wheels and tires. Does anyone know if this will help with pulling my trailer?? If not, then what can I do??

The wheel diameter doesn't do much to affect the towing capibilities, although the tire diameter can. A big tire will make it more difficult to tow.

Another thing to do, if you haven't, is make sure you are not pulling in over drive. The engine will be more responsive, and it is easier on the transmission.

the stupid thing is that my owners manual says that it should tow 7,000lbs with a weight distribution hitch and i am having a hard time pulling 5000lbs or less, especially going up grades into the moutains. THe last time, I was at 5500 RPM and going about 35 MPH. If I can get 45-50 up a grade I would be happy.......any idea's???
