Default transmission swap question

Good evening ; I have a 1994 4x4 f150 with a 5.8 and a E4Od transmission. I feel soon the evil transmission grimlins are going to finish off the transmission... So I would like to be
prepared since this type budget hit would be pretty major for me. Question is since the e4od tranny is getting old and hard to find what if any trannys are simple to replace the e40d with.
I would like to know my options . Also my transfer case is a manual lever not electric shift and I would like to maintain this .
I understand my tranny could be rebuilt for the 3k dollar range but I am looking into finding a good solid used that I can trust I really prefer a tranny that has never been into if possible.
Thanks for any info you can supply
Grumpy

Hi Grumpy,
I'm pretty sure you may get other opinions whether this is a good move or not.
I personally do not think this is a good move to attempt to install a different model trans. The ECMs in the vehicles control the trans functions according to several various sensor inputs. As you know by this time Ford vehicles vary a lot from year to year and model to model and each individual unit has it's own individual controls and trying to change them can open a can of worms. If you plan on keeping your Ford for a few more years the best choice would be a Ford Remanufactured trans . They come with the best warranty and all the latest updated parts and modifications..Unfortunately that is also the most expensive choice.
A low mileage salvage yard trans could be your next best choice. The idea is to put in exactly the same type trans as removed.
Last could be to have your trans done by a local rebuilder, but you need to know exactly what you are getting and what kind of warranty is offered.
For all the trouble to check out and hope for the best while spending $$ doing that , might be worth to save that and consider one of the choices available.

Thank You Hanky that's what I need to know and I had kinda suspected that would be the way it was.

Simple,, not really, but the 4R100 (upgrade E4OD) which replaced the E4 is backwards compatible with some needed component changes. The OE PCM would be able to control the later build.
The 4R being a much more robust unit, the swaps are done, and are more easily sourced for a decent used, but generally a used or reman is less work than a later build swap.
You should be able to sharpen the pencil on a 3k trans in a replacement search, and more so if you do the R&R yourself..

Ok with the tranny being needed to stay within the e40d class and since a used is the best choice ie salvage tranny. if the tranny is a e4od from a 4x4 like we have would it matter if it were say electric shift transfer case, or was a different year ours being a 1994 are there certain years that would be drop in and some not so easy.
I checked with ford to get a factory reman and was told ford did not have such. If this is fact or the guy we talked to was the janitor answering the phone we don't know but that was what we were told so were persuing the salvage market.
Thanks for any help
