Default Won't pick up fuel when at 1/4 of a tank

I have a 98 F-150 XLT standard cab step bed. When my fuel gauge hits 1/4 tank the engine stalls out and dies. Add gas and it runs fine. I tapped on the fuel tank and it seems to have about 1/4 tank of fuel. I filled the truck with it being around 1/4 tank and it took 16 gallons of gas. Should be a 25 gallon tank according to my manual. Any ideas why it won't pick up fuel once it gets to 1/4 tank?

Thanks for the help in advance,

grey

One thought that jumps to mind is something wrong with the fuel sender; many different body styles use fuel pumps that are similar, but not identical. It's possible that a shorter sender is installed, or possibly the pump is just having internal problems.

I inherited the truck from my Dad. I drove it across country from Cincinnati, to bring it home and everything worked fine. Only after sitting a spell did problem pop up. Here is a dumb question, if someone put water in the before I put a locking gas cap on it, could that have caused the problem? I'm not saying it did happen but I have had some strange problems with a former neighbor and wonder if it could be a possibility.

if you can try checking and see if there is a leak in th pump some where ive had this same problem before and it was the hose that connected the pump to the outlet had rotted away is a simple fix with some good fuel like and a couple hose clamps if that may be the issue

Hose problems at the top of the tank a common problem, worth looking into.
