Default 1995 f250 buying questions

sorry if this is in the wrong forum. well i've been in the market for a pickup for a little while now and recently saw a 1995 ford f250 v8 5.8 auto w/overdrive 4x4 xl. std. cab with about 170k asking about $2500. i've been looking for something like a chevy 1500 with a 350 in it as i know parts are everywhere and the 350 is an easy engine to work on and such. anyhow i'm looking to do some medium duty towing (my jeep about 5000lbs +trailer) with it on occasion when going wheeling, but also use it for my daily driver. I really know nothing about ford's the engine trans t-case or axles, and how they hold up, gas mileage, and so on. any links to spec sheets as to tranny and axles /t-case would be a help as well so i can do a little research on them. So if anyone can shed some light on this i would be forever in your debt.

IMO......

Early to mid 90's trucks were some of the best trucks Ford ever built.. But buying a higher mileage truck is always a risk, but care, maintenance and supporting service docs/records reduce the risk as would any repair documentaion.. With a truck with 170K my very first question would be any trans work done.. Generally by now it would have, or if not, would be at the end of its service life in most cases.. The E40D is an adequate trans if cared for, but many never made it to that kind of mileage.. These trucks were pretty bullet proof and I've owned a few myself, not to mention have worked on more than my share over the years.. I'd have NO PROBLEM buying another if I needed a reliable truck.. At 170K you might expect some repair issue, but I've seen many of these rigs go well over 200K.. The 5.8 should pull OK, a 7.5 would bea harder puller, but mileage is a shocker for most.. All'n All...A solid truck...
