Just bought a mint 02 7.3. Extended cab long bed 2wd automatic. Cruise does not work but the backlights that turn on with the headlights do. Horn works but will blow the fuse if its a 15 amp like it’s supposed to be. Gets warm with a 25 amp. Yes i am taking the fuse out. No airbag light at all and theres the 5 beeps every minute or so for the first 10ish minutes of driving and it comes back randomly. Just did a clock spring and it made zero difference. Help please? Also if you reference some connector or module please include picture. Had plenty of 7.3’s but never really had to work on them so I won’t know what the hell it is.
So other than tracing wiring what do you think the issue probably is? I’ve seen a lot of forum posts about it but no fixes other than clockspring. It was a cheaper rockauto clockspring are they known to be junk?
I would check on the horn relay first, borrow a relay (identical relay of course) within your own truck, then get to the horn switch and also bypass the horn relay, then you can narrow down the issue. All 3 are relevant, fix the horn first the other two could be fixed automatically.
You can tell by the very first diagram your horn button sends ground signal to energize the horn relay.
If the horn works fine after testing with and without the relay, then it's time to remove the steering wheel and honk without the horn button, or at the clock spring and see. You just need to get the ground source from the steering column to simulate the horn button action. It's possible that there is a connection problem to the ground source on the horn switch itself. So keep honking and testing with and without the switch and see if the fuse blows again or not, before you get to the clock spring.
Find attached a pdf to get to the horn switch.
Buying a new clock spring is your last resort, the best you can do is to clean the electrical part of the clock spring using contact cleaner or 91% isopropyl alcohol.
So I took the airbag back off and put the correct fuse in and I honked the horn with a wire at the plug on the clock spring and it still blew the fuse immediately. Also apparently the horn relay is made into the interior fuse box and not servicable.
So i ended up getting a bulb for the airbag light on the cluster. Now the annoying beeping is gone but there is still a error in the airbag system. The light stays on. Also now with that in and with a fuse in for the horn the cruise control works. So my two big issues of the beeping and cruise not working are fixed but i would still like to make it actually right. It would be nice to use the horn and not have a airbag light on all the time lol
If K33 horn relay is integrated into the CJB you can still bypass it:
1) Remove the F2-37 (15A fuse)
2) Put add-a-circuit into F2-37 with the 15A fuse you just removed, add-a-circuit has 2 fuse slot so make sure this 15A is for the new circuit
3) Connect the wire coming from the add-a-circuit to terminal 30 and 86 of a new relay or a relay you removed from another vehicle
4) Run a new (same or heavier gauge) wire from terminal 87 of the new relay to the horn connector terminal 1 (YE/LG) using some sort of jumper pin without removing the horn connector, doing so you also don't have to worry about the ground (BK) wire for the horn
5) Locate the DB wire (circuit 20) at the CJB terminal 19, without removing any connector or cutting/splicing any wire, add a new wire using jumper pin to the DB wire, and connect this wire to terminal 85 of the relay
When the original 15A F2.37 is removed, the K33 horn relay is pretty much deactivated because of the lack of 12v power feed to terminal 30.
If this setup doesn't blow your 15A to your add-a-circuit you then need to narrow down the cause, it can be from 87 to horn, F2-37 to 30, F2-37 to 86, and lastly, the horn button thru clockspring to 85.
While you are at it, and since step (5) above already has a wire going to terminal 85, you can check this trigger wire and use voltmeter to check for any voltage (short to power), use ohmmeter and check for resistance for the DB wire circuit.
You also can bypass the clockspring to isolate the problem, you just need to connect the wire from 85 to a new horn button or a push button switch, and ground this horn button to chassis ground accordingly.
To reset the airbag light you can:
1) disconnect battery ground and wait 5 minutes
2) remove the driver airbag connector at the steering column and wait half hour or so
3) reconnect the airbag connector
4) reconnect the battery ground
5) turn key to ON position, wait 5 seconds, then key out
6) turn key to ON, the light proves out correctly now?
