Default 2003 F-250 5.4L V8 Shifter issues

Truck had been running fine. Just getting home after grocery shopping out of the blue I go to put my truck in reverse and it won't go past drive. I'm perplexed so I call my older brother he tells me to throw it into Manual 1 and the try to get it to park. It goes to neutral finally so I can turn it off and start it up no problem. I look online and they talk about tightening these two bolts on the back of the shifter linkage. I check and tighten those but they weren't loose. Idk what else there is. Can someone give me an idea?

Does the shift lever feel sloppy? At all...
When the torx bolts are loose, or one falls out, the shifter will have lots of play. If sloppy, I’d also check the cable attachment at the trans bracket. The other possibility may be the shifter tube itself in the column..

The shifter felt maybe a hair sloppy but nothing like the videos I've seen online. I checked those torx bolts they were pretty tight. Where is the trans bracket?

The selector cable for the shifter where it attaches near those torx screws on the lower arm, then runs down to the transmission (drivers side) and snaps into the mounting bracket there. If comes loose from the bracket it wouldn't shift correct..My 03 F250 6.0 came loose a few times, had to secure it with a heavy tie strap through the clips that hold it in place. The cable end has a couple clips, more like 'ears' that expand once passing through the bracket to lock it in place.. The cable also has an adjustable/locking end that connects it to the shift lever ball on the trans. Usually not a problem though.
May not be your issue with the bracket etc, but something to check..
When you attempting gear selections, from manual 1 on up,, back down, do you 'feel' the detent meaning each gear position sort of click?

Ya I feel it. It's very smooth with no catching until I get to reverse and it's like I run into a wall or the end of my shift capabilities. I'll check the cable at first light and see what it looks like

Default Stiff shifter

Try lubing the trans range control selector on the side of trans. Or replace about $25.00 on amazon. Just replaced 2 on A f150 and a F250. They were frozen to the shaft on trans could not get into park or reverse. If you replace emery shaft on trans and use plenty of never seize. You will think you have a new truck gear shift selector never moved so easily. Lots of videos on you tube on how to replace

Try loading to full weight limit (and then another 1000lbs). Then run that thing at about 80 for 10 minutes. See what it feels like then.
