2008 F250 6.8L PCM confusion
Hello everyone. I am trying to make sense out of the PCM situation on my friend's F250SD 6.8L. She went to the store, and when she came out it starts but when put in gear it just stalls, and wrench symbol shows up. I drove to where she was and put my code reader on it and got these three: P060B, P2104, P2110. She had it towed to a shop near where she lives (about 50 miles from me) and they said throttle control, the next day they said it needs PCM. Well I thought this would be simple but wow it got confusing with some conflicting info. She retrieved the PCM and sent a picture of the label. 8C3A-12A650-BFD also stamped FCN3 and VK2-C3812... Spent a day on the phone, found different versions but none with the same codes except one, which was used and $3,000+! Junkyards down in Houston show 4 F250's with 6.8 but hate to drive all the way there and find not the one. I see on Alldatadiy a list of about 10 different ones none -BFD though one does show FCN3.
So basic question is this: Are these all the same hardware with different firmware flashed into it? Meaning can I get any of them and just have it flashed to her VIN? Or does it really need all of the nomenclature to match?
How do I crack the secrets of these PCM's?
So we wound up sending it ti a "we can fix it" place for $550 (still crazy high price considering it has less smarts than an Arduino) if they cannot fix it Cardone shows it for over $3K but not available till November! What is so special about this unit?

Continuing my F250 PCM saga... four places so far said they had one then after I ordered it they said they didn't have one. The only one now stating they have the PCM is FS1 (Flagship). But I already sent them the original for repair, came back same issue, sent back, returned and still same issue. The shop assures me they have checked all wiring, changed accelerator pedal assembly, throttle position sensor, throttle actuator. Codes were P060B, P2104, P2110, P2126.
So, can anyone here 'splain to me the variations on these PCM's? The part number is always 8C3A-12A650- suffix three letters, Some for 5.4L, some diesel, few 6.8L V10. But there is another code on it that seems to be important, this one is VK2-C3812 "hardware code". There are 6.8L PCMs with VK2-C3810 and some places say they cannot work on the VK2-C3812. The part number on the one I need is 8C3A-12A650-BFD. Some have said the -BFE can be substituted. But there are other -C3812's out there. Question: can the correct hardware version unit be flashed to be any of the others? Is that the suffix? Something related to firmware?
I need to get her truck back on the road but this PCM is so tough to find. Flagship says they indeed have one on the shelf but it is $3300!
Today need to pull tires off her JEtta to see what is making huge bad sounds.

Well after 5 false starts buying PCMs that in fact didn't exist I finally broke down and bought one that is on the shelf from Flagship 1. Didn't want to buy from the as they charged me $550 to "fix" the old one but in fact never opened it but I have no other choice except to keep chasing junkyard ghosts. Cost was $3100. Unreal how they are taking advantage of the fact these are scarce. Don't have it in hand yet but I got the USPS tracking number. I'm actually expecting it to not fix the problem, my money is on the wiring. But it is out of my hands locked in the repair shop. And I want to hand him the "new" one so he can install it and see what's up. At that point I'll insist on working with his guy chasing wires.
Now my Grand Marquis is dead... that's another post

Yes it did. The only problem was the price, $3300. Don't send it to be "rebuilt". This thing is sealed and glued shut. I tried to do a post mortem on it after the "new" one installed. Also, several places said they had it then backed down. I'm guessing that the guys I bought it from are scarfing up all they can find turning them into gold, so to speak. I first sent it to be repaired by them to the tune of $550. Came back and still didn't work.

I don't look here too often, sorry about the delay.
I cannot find the sheet with the DTC's but it had to do with throttle control (gas pedal) and throttle plate control motor on the throttle body. It was in full limp mode.
