Default 2018 F250 6.2L grinding/scrubbing noise when accelerating

I have a 2018 F250 XL 6.2L 4WD. The truck is new to me, so not sure if this has happened since the truck was new or just started later in its life. When accelerating under 2000RPM's it has a scrubbing/grinding noise for a second or two then no noise, normal engine sounds. It usually happens when cruising between 40-50mph, slight lift off accelerator, then when getting back to it, it will scrub/grind for a second.

I took the truck to a very trusted mechanic, he rode with me and then drove the truck, he did hear the noise and was able to get it to do it when he drove it later alone. I left it with him for a day and he went through the drivetrain. He checked hubs, u-joints, driveshaft, heat shields, etc., pretty much everything you can touch with the truck on a lift. He could not find anything wrong with the truck, and even said it was in better shape underneath than he expected before getting it on the lift. This has become very frustrating. I have seen one or two other forums on here that sounded like similar problems, but I have never seen a resolution to the issue. Has anyone else experienced this, or had the issue and has a fix?

It really depends on where the noise is. Why don't you pop the hood, find a helper to rev, maybe it's just the belt about to wear out or misaligned.

The noise seems to come from drivers side, it happens so fast you hear it then it's gone. Just revving up the engine will not make it do it, it has to be under a load while driving.

Do you know if he checked the motor mounts ? Sounds like you have a bad one.

Not sure if he checked motor mounts, but I will ask! That would make sense, I certainly hope it is something like that and not internal.

I have taken this truck to a transmission shop to either give me the bad news or rule transmission out altogether. They called me today and told me that the transmission was fine, but the noise is most likely coming from a 4WD actuator on/at the hub. They said there were one on each wheel and without a code they cannot find which one is bad. Then they told me that when one goes to replace all four. They told me this problem would not leave me stranded, would only make grinding noise and not shift into 4WD properly, or at all. Why would they replace all 4 if only 1 is bad? Will the truck throw a code when one goes out, and will the code know which one?

Did that shop really tell you all 4 ?

There are no sensors to tell if engaged or not, so pretty sure likely no codes.

Pretty sure the guy that called me didn't know ithey are only on the front. I am going to pick it up tomorrow and take it to another tech, long time ford man. He thinks he might be able to figure it out.

Default Any resolution?

I have a 2018 with nearly exact symptoms. Doesn’t make the noise from a stop. Just when easing into the throttle at speed. Suspect the hubs but haven’t gotten there yet.

Mine remains a total mystery. The truck is clean, tight, runs out well, very good performance. But, still doing that at the same speed and conditions. I have noticed the noise is the same, maybe more noticeable at times, but not getting worse, very consistent and can feel a slight vibration. Honestly, the vibration could be in my heaat at this pointl, but if you're having the same issue you'll know what I mean. It is maddening that 3 of the best, and one technican that is a true blue Ford guy, very good at his craft, they all tell me to wait until it gets worse or breaks. But, none of them has advised getting out of the truck, it is solid.
