Default 5r110w and Custom Tuning

Hey Everyone,

New to the forum, not to Ford trucks.

This post is meant for 5r110 specialists, if there are any on here. Please, no anecdotal stories or advice.

BACKGROUND: I just had my 5r110 rebuilt out of my 06 F-250 King Ranch. Truck had 220K going into the rebuild and never had any transmission work done prior (I bought the truck with 167K). I have the following mods: ARP head studs, EGR delete, Sinister coolant filter, 4" MBRP turbo back exhaust, and a custom tune that adds 150HP added 4 years ago. Transmission is stock as hell. 6 weeks ago I was driving and noticed it slipping. Pulled over shut if off. Tried to pull codes but there were none, go figure. Start back up, truck moves but in limp mode. It was enough to get it home though. Next day decide to change fluid and filters. I do that and now the truck wouldn't move at all. ****. Got it towed to a nearby transmission shop and explained it all to them. They tore it down and found all my clutches were shot and 2nd gear was toast. No idea what caused it. For the record, I don't race my truck or abuse it. They do a standard rebuild and test drive it and get a little ways down the road and find that the truck went into limp mode again. They tore it down again and found the overdrive clutches were smoked. Ok. So they replace that and the TC for good measure. This time they didn't even get it all but 10ft and same issue. Smoked the overdrive clutches and some fluid burped out of the trans dipstick tube. Puzzling to say the least. So they tear it down and replace parts once more. This time they called tech support at Transgo, who they order their parts through. A nice guy walked them through some checks and suggested to replace a bushing in the pump. So they do that. But this time before they reinstall and test I went over there and took my custom tune off. They later test drove it and now it works like a charm. I should also add they checked all the grounds, tighten the hell out of the main ground and added another from the bell housing to frame.

QUESTION: What are the odds that removing the tune is what did the trick? How can I be certain that if I put the tune, or any tune back on there it won't cause the same issues? I was able to talk to the gentleman at Transgo and asked him the same questions. He was vague about doing some tests with a tune on to verify it wouldn't harm the transmission.

I am certainly no transmission expert just trying to learn. I have learned that the torqueshift is very complex and not cheap. Any good solid advice will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the site..

Generally when a high mileage trans is remanufactured, all the frictions and and normally the steels are replaced, as would be the TC, bushings, pump etc. In a rebuild, case, bushings are checked first , pump taken apart and inspected, but more often replaced. Sometimes in a rebuild frictions will be reused (some will still have the part number inking on them) after inspection but usually a rebuild is all new frictions if a kit is used. Most often if the unit has had suspended debris/metals circulated through under ops. Steels, if shop built get reused at times.
You made no mention of the trans cooler? Was it replaced, or just flushed? Seems it went over temp.

It sounds like it was partially rebuilt, TC should be a replacement with every build unless it was broken down for a correction.
Addind a tune usually alters shift points, shift firmness, and adds more line pressure for better clutch hold.. The tune wouldn’t be responsible incorrect applications etc. Since the tune was in use for quite some time prior on the stock trans, and the unit had failed multiple times after being rebuilt. I’d think something went wrong in their process each time..
My last 05 had a Diablo Predator tune for a good portion of its life. Trans was never an issue
Knowing the power potential you could put through the trans, I’d think they would of had better build options suggested to you over a limited or partial stock refresh..

Hayapower,

Those were my thoughts too, on the over heating. I don't believe they flushed the cooler. After driving it around the last 2 days my temps have been normal. I think it was an error on their part with the initial install. They used a master overhaul kit. PN# 16006X. They also replaced the lockup solenoid.

With my SCT I've played with the shift points a little but never felt very confident with it. I usually just put it back to default after. I may put my tune back on after a few hundred miles and go easy. I'm also going to research shift points and learn how to properly set them should I desire in the future.

I appreciate the help!
