Default '96 F350 Differential fluid

Couple of things going on.....driver's rear wheel drum is warm....all the time...not sure if brake is dragging.....bad bearings? Went to check differential fluid and out came runny brown ....like it was overfilled or something. Are you supposed to only fill the differential when it's cool? Does the oil in the differential case go out to the transaxle toward the wheels or just stay in the case? Anyone ever have water intrusion into the from the ABS sensor attachment? Sorry for all the questions but obviously I'm stumped. Thanks.

If it looked like soup, it has been contaminated with water.

It should be drained and refilled with the lubricant recommended in your owner's manual, possibly 75/140 which is synthetic lubricant.. 85/140 is mineral based and OK to use if that is what is recommended.

Thanks. The parts store has a gasket for the housing but the shop manual says RTV. Does it matter? I have a hasket here but don't want to run to town for RTV unless it's that much better.
BTW I think water may be getting in via the ABS sensor or the over flow vent.

If the gasket is all you have, I would use it.

Next time you are in town, would be a good idea to get some RTV.

If you are using synthetic lube in anything and need to use RTV there is a special RTV just for use with synthetic lubes.

My rear axle code is 35. Does that mean I DON'T have a limited slip differential? I didn't pay attention but have been putting in the Valavoline 75-140 with limited slip differential additive from Walmart. Is that a potential problem? Could that be why the oil looks light brown? Any help appreciated.
