Default 99 7.3 problems 2 look out 4

Thank God Ford is finally fixing the cam sensor problem. Now, if your 99 (and possibly other early models)7.3 suddenly shuts down and won't restart, check the green 30 amp fuse under the steering column. If it's blown it will cut power to the main computer. The reason it may have blown is because the fuel bowl heater is on the same fuse, and the flimsey coilwire may have shorted to the inside of the bowl. A quik fix is to unplug the wire harness at the back of the bowl and replace fuse. If (under the fuel filter) you have the old type with a round plate and thin wire coming thru a rubber washer, you may want to replace it with the new model, oval plate with heavy solid eliment,or keep a close eye on the wire and rubber ring on the old one. Also, the wiring harness on the drivers siderubs on top of the manifold cover and will ware through causing shorts.
I'll hit 300,000 this week. 7.3 has been great and still strong as new. Everything else around it fell apart, though. Now I have a (tin can being kicked) grinding sound when I first start off- forward or reverse. I think I blew something in the flywheel pulling thru a snowbank. CHA-CHING$$$. Just replaced the starter at 299,500.
