Changing Glow Plugs

Changing Glow Plugs
Curious how hard changing glow plugs on a 7.3 is. I'm by no stretch a mechanic but I have basic skills like changing brakes, spark plugs, oil, installing air intake etc. I know if you mess up it could definitely be bad news and an expensive repair bill. I just find it tough knowing I could buy motorcraft plugs for $80 and mechanic shops want to charge me $400 to do it.

Welcome to the site..
95’s were problematic for burning the UVC (under valve cover) gasket connectors on both the external truck harness side connector, the UVC gasket connector itself, as well as the internal stub hasness’s. Glow plugs certainly, but good chance of the others parts failing from heat and not only GP’s. GP relay as well..
The GP’s can be ohm tested, proved out through the UVC connector. But being the earlier 7.3 failed the gasket and connectors, not always accurate if an internal harness failure..
If you look at the valve covers, they’ll have 2 connectors per side (inboard towards the Valley).. Look at the ‘outer most’ sides of each of the connectors,, theses are the glow plug feeds, 4 per bank. If their bulged, or charred, it will need the gasket and most often the stub harness/s. If the trucks harness connector pins are burnt they must be repaired, and there’s a repair connector kit available.
As far as the glow plug replacement, not a hugely difficult job, not much to go wrong other than inspection/repair noted. The right/passenger valve cover is a little work to get out, but again not too bad. If you want to tackle the job, we can help with some tech advice and illustration...
Injector O rings if OE we’re a problem for the 95.. If the glow system checks out, harness/gaskets, ohm tested each GP and all is spec, and the truck is having difficulty starting cold (?) Something to consider for attention since the valve covers would already be off.
