Default clunking noise 99 f-250 5.4l

I just bought a used 99 f-250. When I put it in to drive it makes a clunking noise. I check all u-joins and ok. It sound like it is comming from the yolk of the transfer case. Is this normal? I have owned many cars and trucks in the past and never heard of this noise.

Sorry, i hit the enter key and sent that too soon--anyway, you have to cut the metal bands that hold the
rubber dust cover in place and then slide the rear portion of the drive line out. Grease it thoroughly with
SILICONE grease==it is waterproof--and reassemble and, voila, the "clunk" is gone.
I knowt this sounds odd and i thought so too, but i did it and no more clunk.
Again, if your clunk is when you start up and to some degree when you stop, every time just about, then this is what it is. If you want to call me you can at 530 873 4612 or email me at banjo@onemain.com--central california area--I have a V10 4WD but if you have a two part rear drive line, it will be the same.
good luck
